Community events for Mental Health Month

Monadnock Ledger Transcript - 5/3/2018

There will be several community events in Keene and Peterborough this month recognizing Mental Health Month, which is going on throughout May.

On May 3, the film Hidden in Plain Sight, featuring the stories of eight homeless individuals and the staff and volunteers at Hundred Nights Shelter in Keene, will be shown at the Keene Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Each homeless person in the film was asked a series of questions, highlighting the diversity of circumstances that lead them to their situation. Leaders, workers and volunteers of three shelters share their experiences and reflect on how homelessness in Keene may be diminished. The film is dedicated to Carrie Covey, one of the homeless individuals who was interviewed, who died shortly after the recording of her interview. The film is produced by Greg Pregent at 710 Main Films 2017.

The Redfern Arts Center and Peterborough Community Theatre will be showing the film Paper Tigers, sponsored by the Fenton Family Dealerships and co-hosted by Healthy Monadnock. This film follows a year in the life of an alternative school that has radically changed its approach to disciplining its students, becoming a promising model for how to break the cycles of poverty, violence and disease that affect families. Redfern will show the film on May 15 and the Peterborough Theater on May 22, with both showings at 6:30 p.m.

“Stressed brains can’t learn.” That was the nugget of neuroscience principal Jim Sporleder used to shape a new way of discipline: one based on understanding and treatment rather than judgment and suspension. Fights declined by 75 percent and graduation rates increased five-fold. Paper Tigers is a testament to what the latest developmental science is showing: Just one caring adult can help break the cycle of adversity in a young person’s life. This film contains strong language and may not be suitable for small children.

On May 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cheshire Medical Center, in conference room 6, ChangeDirectionNH will hold a workshop offering insights into the ChangeDirectionNH Campaign and explain five common signs of suffering that might signal a mental health problem. Participants will learn Five Steps for helping an individual get started with their recovery. This workshop is a primer in Mental Health First Aide. The workshop is led by Phil Wyzik. This workshop is free, but advance registration is needed before May 27 by calling 357-4400.
