Coast Guard deploys safety zone around military jet crash site off Kewalo

Honolulu Star-Advertiser - 12/13/2018

Dec. 13--The Coast Guard has established a 300-yard safety zone in waters off of Kewalo Basin as officials conduct an investigation into Wednesday's crash involving a Hawker Hunter military training jet.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Matthew West said the safety zone is approximately two miles south of Kewalo. The public is advised to steer clear of the area.

The Hawker Hunter crashed at approximately 2:25 p.m. Wednesday after taking off. The pilot ejected from the aircraft before the jet crashed into the water and sank.

Emergency Medical Services treated and took him in serious condition to a hospital.

Officials of the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam said the jet was operated by a civilian contractor flying in conjunction with the Hawaii Air National Guard's "Sentry Aloha" exercises.

The exercise was suspended after the crash but was to resume this morning.

Terry Williams, spokesman of the National Transportation Safety Board, said they are investigating the crash.
