Thanks for story about veteran receiving home

The Penn Hills Progress - 6/4/2017

Thank you so very much for the recent article “Wounded Warrior Receives Home” concerning the gifting of a renovated home to a wounded U.S. Army veteran.

The home on Bryant Drive in Penn Hills was built by my parents, where they raised nine children and entertained their 20 grandchildren.

My father was a World War II Navy veteran. He lost his only brother, a U.S. Marine, in the Battle of Iwo Jima.

He raised an Air Force veteran, and his grandson, my son, is currently serving in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Our family is so pleasantly surprised and gratified that our former home has been gifted in this way. It was hard to sell and say goodbye to our house when our mother passed a few years ago. It was also sad to hear that the house had gone into foreclosure under the new owners.

My favorite part of the article was the mention of the two large trees in the backyard. They were planted from seeds in coffee cans by my older sister and a friend.

When they were large enough, my father planted them in the yard and lovingly tended to them for the rest of his life. Many a day, my mother would watch with worry from the dining room window as he scrambled up the trees to trim them to perfection before family gatherings.

I would love for the new owner to know that a veteran is looking down from heaven, very pleased that his home on earth has been gifted in this way.
