Laketran honoring veterans with free rides through Nov. 12

News-Herald - 11/7/2022

Nov. 7—Laketran will be offering free rides to veterans during the week of Veterans Day from Nov. 7 — 12, continuing its longstanding tradition.

Riders on Local Routes and Park-n-Ride will need to inform their drivers that they are a veteran when they board the bus for their trip to be free, agency officials confirmed.

Dial-a-Ride customers should inform Laketran of their veteran status when scheduling their reservations.

"Each year, Laketran provides nearly 5,000 Dial-a-Ride trips to Lake County veterans to access health care appointments," said CEO Ben Capelle. "It is the least we can do for the sacrifice veterans have given to our country, and we would like to continue to show our support and appreciation."

For over 25 years, Laketran has operated a special Veterans Medical Transportation service, in partnership with Lake County Veterans Service Commission and Lake County commissioners.

The service provides free door-to-door, Dial-a-Ride transportation for Lake County veterans and their spouses to the county's VA outpatient clinic, administration office and the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in University Circle in Cleveland.

According to officials, Laketran expanded the program by subsidizing free Dial-a-Ride transportation to any adult day care or medical appointment for Lake County veterans, either in Lake County or to University Circle hospitals.

Eastlake resident Ralph Carter has been riding Laketran for nearly 20 years, taking Dial-a-Ride trips to Cleveland and throughout Lake County.

Like "many veterans," he believes the service is integral to his well-being.

"I don't drive, so I wouldn't be able to get to my medical appointments, especially downtown," said Carter, who served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1971.
