Long Beach honors military veterans with Friday Veterans Day

Grunion Gazette - 11/10/2022

Nov. 10—Long Beach

Veterans Day, Nov. 11, falls on Friday this year and Long Beach will stretch the festivities into Saturday.

On the day itself, a "Reclaim Armistice Day" will take place sponsored by the Veterans for Peace and the Justice & Peace Committee of the South Coast Interfaith Council. The event will be from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Admiral Kidd Park, 2125 Santa Fe Ave. It will include an 11 Bells ceremony at 11 a.m., an appearance by Seventh District City Councilman Roberto Uranga, entertainment and a food distribution.

Also on Friday, the Alpert Jewish Community Center will host a reception at 11 a.m. to open the Jewish American History exhibit in the Gatov Gallery presented by the Jewish American Military Historical Society. The exhibit includes artifacts and photographs honoring Jewish American Congressional Medal of Honor recipients and local Jewish American Military heroes. The exhibit will be on display through the end of November at the center on the corner of Willow Street and Grand Avenue.

On Saturday, a city-sponsored Veterans Day Celebration takes place at Houghton Park near the Vietnam War memorial at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Harding Street. The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and will include music from Knight Ryder and local Long Beach DJ Dennis Owens, as well as a resource fair, a kids' zone and food trucks, a giant obstacle course and a beer garden. Go to longbeach.gov/veteransday for more.

Veterans Day is not a local government holiday, and city offices will be open Friday. However, the U.S. Postal Service observes the holiday, and there will not be any mail delivery.
