The Sentinel - 11/3/2023

Nov. 3—A number of Veterans Day events are scheduled for next week, with most ceremonies to take place on Veterans Day itself on Saturday, Nov. 11.

According to Cumberland County, Shippensburg will have a Veterans Day Parade at 2 p.m. Sunday starting at King and Prince streets and ending at King and Morris streets. There is no rain date for the event. The rest of the events won't happen until after Tuesday's election, with Rep. Thomas Kutz hosting a veterans breakfast Thursday that required RSVPs, and the Carlisle Elks Lodge will offer a veterans brunch Friday for the veterans it has already invited.

Also on Friday, Cumberland County reported that Saint Patrick School will have its annual Veterans Day tribute at 9:30 a.m., while the U.S. Army Heritage & Education Center will host a watchfire ceremony at 5 p.m.

Ceremonies on Veterans Day start with a commemoration at 10:30 a.m. in Carlisle. The ceremony will begin in the ceremonial courtroom on the second floor of the Old Courthouse, with state Sen. Greg Rothman delivering the Veterans Day message, according to the Carlisle Joint Veterans Council, which is organizing the event.

With patriotic music provided by Lamberton Middle School, Rothman will place the wreath on the Square, escorted by the Cedar Cliff High School Army JROTC Honor Guard. The Cumberland County Veterans Honor Guard will provide the rifle salute and taps, and VFW Post 477 Commander Rick Olson will serve as master of ceremonies.

According to Cumberland County, other ceremonies include a veterans appreciation event at the West Shore Elks at 11 a.m., an enlistment ceremony and concert at 11 a.m. indoors at AHEC, and a Veterans Day ceremony at 2 p.m. at Hampden Township Veterans Park.

On Sunday, Nov. 12, there will be a Veterans Day ceremony at Silver Spring Township's Veterans Memorial off Willow Mill Park Road at 1 p.m., and the Carlisle Town Band will take the stage at Carlisle High School at 4 p.m. for its patriotic fall concert.
